Here are five simple ways to stay safe online and avoid phishing scams:

-Check who’s contacting you before clicking or sharing. Scammers now send texts or emails that look like they’re from your bank, Amazon, or even a medical firm, asking you to click a link or fill out forms. Always look at the sender’s email or phone number closely. If it looks weird (like extra numbers or strange words or emails ending in outlook.com, gmail.com, yahoo.com, live.com), don’t trust it. JUST DELETE THE EMAIL OR TEXT.

-Don’t click links in texts or emails that seem urgent. A big scam in 2025 is “smishing” (phishing through texts), where you get a message saying your package is delayed or your account is locked, pushing you to click a link fast. Stop and think: Did you order something? If a message feels pushy, delete it.

-Be careful with phone calls asking for personal info. Scammers use AI to fake voices, making calls sound like they’re from your grandkid or a trusted company. If someone calls asking for money, passwords, OTP (One time passcode) or your SIN number, hang up. Call the person back using a number you trust to make sure it’s them. Never share sensitive info over the phone unless you’re 100% sure.

-Watch out for fake websites that look real. Scammers create websites that copy trusted sites, like your bank or PayPal, to trick you into logging in. Always double-check the website address in your browser. If it has odd letters or numbers (like “paypall” instead of “paypal”), it’s fake. Bookmark your bank or shopping sites so you can go there safely without clicking links.

-Talk to someone you trust if something feels off. Scammers are good at making you feel scared or rushed, like saying your account will close if you don’t act now. If you get a strange email, text, or call, don’t act alone. Ask a family member, friend, or neighbor to look at it with you. Taking a moment to check can save you from a scam.

Don’t let scammers catch you off guard. Our weekly post will keep your defenses on track!
